On Monday, Jan. 11, the Harrisonburg JV girls basketball team faced off against Spotswood High School at home. Early on, the game stayed close, with Spotswood leading only 13-8 through the first quarter. The Blazers pulled away, leading by 11 at halftime and finishing the game with a 13 point advantage. This led to them winning with the final score of 49-36.

Freshman Cyniah Stuart started at point guard for the Streaks, surrounded by eighth grader Jakaya Brandon, freshman Becky Staton, eighth grader Atilia Thomas and sophomore Jazmyne Martin-McDonald.

For the past two years, the Harrisonburg JV basketball team has carried two eighth graders. This year, they are Jakaya Brandon and Atilia Thomas, Brandon being the team’s lead scorer. Coach Durmont Perry is expecting a lot from the team.

“We’re a real good team, they’re the feature of our program,” Perry said. The JV team has young players, and therefore Perry is preparing them to be the spotlight in the future.

“They’re gonna help build the program we’re striving to get to,” Perry said. The team will continue to train to make the players coming in the future of the program.
