Carly Rae Jepsen hits home with Liu

Before Carly Rae Jepsen’s newest album E.MO.TION, I basically considered her a young Canadian pop artist with a charming voice who took a few songs and shaped herself into a one-hit wonder. I actually heard about the album on Instagram a while before I knew what it was, but after I heard her song “I Really Like You” on the radio for the first time, I was intrigued. So naturally, I decided to look up the music video and realized it was good enough to bring me from almost forgetting her to waiting for her next song to come out.

The video features Tom Hanks (who I always remember for his role as the main character, Forrest Gump, in the amazing 1994 film “Forrest Gump”) and, at the very end, Justin Bieber as part of the dancing crew. In the music video, Hanks is running late to meet Jepsen on a set for the video. During his journey on the streets autographing papers and fist-bumping random civilians and in cabs driving to the set, he lip syncs the entire song until he finally meets up with Jepsen. After they “switch voices back” and share a joke about having a kid, both Jepsen and Hanks do a well-choreographed dance in front of a mansion together with about twenty other backup dancers. While Hanks is lip syncing the song, his motions and hand signs have a certain comedic touch that will keep you smiling. Like most pop music videos, all is well when the video ends and everyone is happy.

“I Really Like You” is upbeat, fun and has lots of technological-sounding music that gives the song a funky kick. Even though the the lyrics are a bit repetitive (The line ”I really, really, really, really, really, really like you” repeats about 10 times), the repetition just makes it easier to sing along to and creates a fairly catchy tune that will get stuck in your head from time to time.

To me, Jepsen’s song just promotes the idea of being brave and making a move for what you want. The phrase “I really … like you, and I want you. Do you want me? Do you want me too?” talks about how she is putting on a brave face and telling someone the truth instead of just hiding it forever. Girls (and guys) should really learn from her lyrics and what she has to say in this brand new album based strongly on the idea of love.

Jepsen really didn’t strike me as the type that would stick around in the pop charts for long the first time I heard her music, but after hearing “I really like you” and some other songs from her newest album E.MO.TION the first few times, I decided she can teach us a lot about figuring out love and how to make one heck of a comeback.
