Knupp works to make prom an option for everyone

Originally when Streaks Serves the ‘Burg sponsor Angela Knupp took part in offering free prom dresses to girls, it was for the students who might not be able to afford to purchase one. It has now evolved into a “first come, first serve” basis.

“Ideally it’s [the program] if there’s a need but realistically I don’t care who gets a dress. The plan is if you borrow a dress you go pay the 10 dollars for it to be dry cleaned and bring it back. If for some reason a person really wanted to keep the dress we could probably work something out,” Knupp said.

Former HHS employee Monica Johns started the prom dress initiative, then Streaks Serve the ‘Burg got involved.

“Specifically myself and Ms. Atkins. I would think [HHS offering free prom dresses] has been around at least five years, if not more,” Knupp said.

The dresses are donated from various sources including different cities in the area and local greek organizations.

“We had one lady send us some from Winchester. We’ve had some donated from JMU sororities as well,” Knupp said.

While there are a variety of dresses to choose from, options for a male is very limited.

“I have one tuxedo, but if a boy really wanted to go to prom Classic Tuxedos will work with them. It may be in exchange for working there for a day or something. If a boy was interested in that they could come to me and we could discuss it,” Knupp said.

Although the turnout is “not huge, but fairly good” for free prom dresses Angela Knupp plans on offering this help with homecoming dresses next school year.

“We have a few, but we are always looking for donations,” Knupp said.
