As winter starts to precipitate, tourists and locals are attracted to pull out their winter recreational equipment and hit the slopes. A familiar four season resort, besides Massanutten, is Canaan Valley and Timberline of West Virginia. With over 39 ski slopes and a 4300 foot summit, this was an ideal trip for the Ski and Snowboard Club to partake.

History teachers Mark Healy, and co sponsor Charles Blair, helped plan and was hoping to attend this outing. Originally planned to take place last Saturday or March 6th the trip was cancelled. Not for weather reasons.

“[There was no ski and snowboard trip because] there was a lack of interest, no one signed up to go,” Healy said. Unfortunately, it is already late season for skiing and snowboarding and most resorts are closing the slopes by March 22nd. Therefore Healy said that a rescheduled event would be unlikely.

“We haven’t had a club meeting in a while, but there are around 20 to 25 kids,” Healy said. Communication was key. Healy said that there wasn’t enough advertising through announcements and posters, but only through minimal verbal conversation. Cost did have a factor too. The trip added up to around $75 per person.

Senior Abner Johnson has not been to a meeting since early February.

“I did sign up before, but usually we don’t have enough people signed up to go,” Johnson said. Like other coincidences, Johnson suspected that he was one of the few that actually did sign up.

“[Besides the money] I don’t think it was too much of a factor, we were told about the dates pretty early so it was easy to save up,” Johnson said.

Now that 70 degree weather as stricken most of the valley, the snow is melting and flowers are blooming. Most slopes are beginning to close as the ski/snowboard club will bide their time till next year for a more informative and recruiting season.
