Envirothon is more rigorous than expected

While those who spend time outside have not often been associated with deadlines and competitions, Envirothon is a mix of the two elements. The competition for this activity is took place on March 30, 2017. Science teacher and Envirothon coach Adam Goble shares insight on the competition before it took place.

“The team’s almost ready. We’re just in the final stages of putting together the presentation and fleshing out the things that we want to say and what we want to emphasize. We’ve been really focusing a lot on getting some unique points and unique ideas to put into our presentation and that takes some time,” Goble said.

According to Goble, the team had tough competition, but has worked hard.

“So we have some tough competition in the area, but this team has worked harder than pretty much any of the teams I’ve had since I’ve started coaching. I’m expecting us to easily move on to the regional competition,” Goble said.

While he was confident that the team would make it to regionals, there are challenges the team faces of which he was aware.

“The biggest challenge outside of the competition that the team faces is that they are all involved in lots of different extracurricular activities at the school, so finding the time to get everything done is difficult,” Goble said.

Senior Kellie Serrell was one of the five members of the Envirothon team.

“I’m very nervous about the competition, but I feel that everything will be okay since we take tests together as a group,” Serrell said.

She also shared insight on the group’s challenges for the competition.

“Honestly, I think our biggest challenge is probably going to be presenting due to the length of time we need. Making sure we get all the information in throughout our presentation [will be the hard part],” Serrell said.

The team missed making it to regionals by two thirds of a point, when they earned over four hundred points and missed first place by twelve.

Despite the impression of calmness some people may have with those that work outdoors, the Envirothon team had a rigorous competition.
