Caroline Shank and Brenna Cowardin were honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution with scholarships at their annual luncheon on March 11th. Shank placed first in the state for a scholarship meant for nursing school.

“Well I am going to nursing school next year and any bit of monetary assistance I can get for that is helpful,” Shank said. “I was surprised because it was a statewide thing, there was a first and second place and since I applied earlier I forgot about it, so when I got the letter in the mail it was really exciting.”

Cowardin place 2nd in the state for a general DAR scholarship for anyone going to college.

“I was excited, before I had gotten a string of rejections from a lot of scholarships,” Cowardin said, “so it was nice to finally get one that was like ‘Yeah, you get money!’.”

Shank’s scholarship was worth 2500 dollars. Cowardin’s was worth 1500 dollars. Winning these scholarships was very exciting for both seniors. These scholarships can be used at colleges and universities in the state, private or public. The luncheon was at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Hartman Dining Hall.

Shank has been accepted to the University of Virginia and Georgetown. The scholarship would work at UVA, but not at Georgetown because it is in the District of Columbia. Cowardin top choices are either Roanoke College or The College of William and Mary.
